Asia & the Pacific Working Group: Kumu Hina Film Screening

Please join the WCAPS Asia & Pacific Working Group for our last AAPI Heritage Month event on Thursday, May 27 at 7pm ET. We will be screening Kumu Hina, a 2014 award-winning documentary film by Dean Hamer and Joe Wilson about Hina Wong-Kalu, a Native Hawaiian activist and kumu (teacher). This film explores the way Hina Wong-Kalu navigates living within the traditional Hawaiian māhū (third gender) culture and also as a modern transgender person in contemporary Hawaii, while mentoring students who are also living "in the middle."

Following the screening, APWG member Christine Nakagawa will be moderating a discussion about the movie. We encourage everyone to stay and share their thoughts!
